PRP Treatment for hair loss

PRP, or platelet rich plasma has been viewed with awe as the new magic wand in the field of aesthetic dermatology. Why has it gained so much importance, I will just review.
Platelet rich plasma is nothing but our own body's defence mechanism in restoring balance at any sight of disturbance in the body.

Platelets can be taken as tiny packs full of growth factors. They can be called as photons of restoration.

Pre PRP Scalp Preparation:

Patient has to wash his/her scalp with antibacterial shampoo on the day of the procedure. Once in the clinic, a numbing cream is applied to the scalp to make the procedure comfortable for them. This stays for an hour. After this, the procedd of preparation of PRP starts.

Procedure:

In PRP, a person's whole blood is drawn, mixed with anticoagulant and subject to centrifugation (spinning), to separate the blood components into RBCs below, PRP in the middle and Platelet poor plasma above. This central zone is then removed and recentrifuged to get a better quantity of platelets. Then these platelets are injected into the scalp where hair growth is deficient.

Benefits:

When done at regular intervals, slowly the dormant follicles are awakened and hair regrowth starts. PRP helps as an adjuvant in hair restoration, especially when all other forms of medications become insufficient to recover lost hair.

Who will benefit from PRP?

  • who have rapid hair loss
  • who have tried application and oral medications with no result
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Androgenetic Alopecia
  • Telogen Effluvium not responding
  • Female Pattern Hair loss

Post Procedure:
PRP is done like a lunch time procedure. Once done, the person can resume work immediately. Since a numbing cream was used prior, there is not much of discomfort post the procedure. The medication prescribed for home care by the dermatologist has to be followed regularly after the procedure, to get the maximum benefits.
How many sessions will be needed?
PRP is done monthly once or tailored according to patients' requirement for hair recovery and restoration. Anything from 3 - 6 sessions will be needed to get the best results...
Where else is PRP used?
In Aesthetic Dermatology, PRP is also used for facial rejuvenation, to help in reduction of facial scars and facial wrinkles. For rapid wound healing and shorter healing time for chronic wounds, like diabetic foot, PRP can be used. For stretch marks and traumatic scars, to help in better results, PRP is combined with Lasers and dermaroller.
